Indigenously built Prosthetic Arm using 3D printer

There are nearly 2 million people living with a limb loss in the United States alone, which can either be due to accident or due to some other medical conditions. Our project which is a prosthetic arm built using a 3D printer is one that gives prominence towards the creation of an affordable, rugged and a semi-functional arm for the disabled. Many people throughout the world do not have sufficient money to buy a prosthetic arm which approximately costs about $15,000 to $50,000. The arm that we have created would cost below $155(₹10,000). For this study, we have only given a few basic and very important movements like arm rotation and gripping. In a general study, it was found that the upper limb prosthesis users, 76% relied on visual feedback, particularly for grasping tasks, 67% of users relied on auditory feedback, primarily for knowing if the limb is moving. In the same study, the users were asked to rate the importance of sensory feedback. Sensory feedback was said to be absolutely important for 45% of the participants, and the most important type was grip force, followed by movement and then positioning, which are vital for most of the daily tasks that people come across. In the arm that we have focus on, the user has to rely on his vision to check the position of his arm which acts as a natural feedback mechanism. But we have enabled the user with the ability to feel the grip, and a control over the force of grip he has on an object by using a muscle sensor.

Development and Fabrication of a Mechanically Actuated 3Way Medical Laboratory Centrifuge

Vector carried diseases (mosquito borne diseases such as Dengue and Malaria) are a major health burden in India and other parts of the world. A major hurdle in the fight against these diseases is the inaccessibility of proper diagnostic health care in epidemic areas such as villages and other remote areas. There is a need for an affordable, accessible health care system which can be used in these areas. The introduction of such a system shall significantly help to reduce the spread of such diseases and help to reduce their burden not only in India, but also around the world. The primary objective of the 3-way centrifuge system is to provide a viable alternative to the current systems by reducing the restrictions on its usage. By providing different modes of working (electrical, battery run and mechanical actuation) in the same product, the 3-way system increases its application and usage range. Thus the system applicable to all types of resource environments. The 3-way actuated centrifuge provides a viable, low cost alternative to current laboratory systems which can be used in low resource settings such villages and rural health centres. The mechanical actuation provides a simple method which does not require any preparation or utilities such as batteries or electricity.

Easy Foot

Almost all of the transtibial prostheses, which are for below-knee amputations that are available on the market, are purely passive devices. Usually two kinds of prosthesis are available in the market. The high end prosthesis usually makes use of the DC motors, hydraulics for their functioning such that the ankle behavior is mimicked completely by them. But cost of these high end bionics is way too much for the common people to buy them. So our idea was to reduce the cost completely such that the common people could afford to buy them. The other set of prosthesis which is the solid ankle prosthesis, which is rigidly built using the carbon fiber, PVC and other materials. This is purely a cast structure and it has no ankle motion and hence poses difficulties for the user. Thus we came up with an idea that could solve the problem of both the cost and also to mimic the ankle behavior. The solution was to harness the energy of the spring mechanism attached to the pylon and the artificial foot. Our design enables an ankle movement to achieve a level of comfort at an affordable price. The first step was to develop a design, and to harness the energy of the spring system and it’s supporting components. This design was further developed and optimized to make it as light and compact as possible, while being able to withstand the loads that are exerted by the driving system and the body weight.

Thermosiphon Water Purification System

A Thermo siphon system basically works on the principle of Natural Convection, i.e, differences in the densities of Water. The Hot Water being lighter will rise up and Cold Water being heavier goes down. This system is designed to provide pure water which is fit for drinking at an affordable price. This system can be mainly used in places where there is lack of rain and scarcity of water. Thermo siphon water purification includes two aspects; first aspect is sediment removal using carbon filter then, pathogen elimination in the manifold due to heat generated by natural convection due to parabolic trough. Initial filtration is carried by carbon a filter. Carbons filtration is a method of filtering that uses a bed of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities using chemical adsorption. Carbon filters are very effective at removing chlorine, benzene, radon, solvents trihalomethane compounds, volatile organic chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides and hundreds of other man-made chemicals that may come into contact with tap water as it proceeds through the system.

Detection of Neuro Degenerative Diseases Using Handwriting Analysis

Neuro Degenerative diseases deal with conditions that primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. When neurons become damaged or die, they cannot be replaced by the body. Neuro degenerative diseases are incurable and devilitating conditions that result in the progressive degeneration and or death of nerve cells. This often affects the fine motor skills of the diseased person. Through this degeneration we unearth the possibilities of having the element or disease. Handwriting analysis or Graphology is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating and understanding personality through the strokes and patterns revealed by handwriting. As we all know, handwriting is the product of our fine motor skills. Modern neurology, for example, benefits from the interpretation of the graphic features of writing and drawing the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases and disorders. We examine how hand writing analysis can be used and has been used historically, as a methodological tool for the assessment of medical conditions. This project deals with an efficient way to detect the presence of neuro generative diseases through hand writing analysis. This will not only reduces the task of going through multiple scans or medical checkups but will also help the doctors ensure his decision towards predicting a disease. This project works on a real time input basis, taking in handwriting & other neunary parameters through a writing pad & a specialized pen.

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternate medicine involving application of pressure or impulse to the feet and palm. It is based on a pseudoscientific system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. We have designed a palm wearable device which can send electrical impulses to those regions of the palm corresponding to specific organs of the body. It is a length adjustable device that is convenient to all the users. This device will send skin sensible, user friendly electrical impulses to the region of the palm which corresponds to heart, liver, brain, pancreas and eye, to cure issues such as diabetes, heart attack, brain tumor, blood pressure. The impulses generated by this device is similar to the impulses that are generated by impulse probes used by reflexology doctors and products which use this concept.

Vibhuthi Vending Machine

There are vibhuthi containers in all the temples where the devotees need to pick it up using their hands. But due to the current COVID-19 pandemic any physical contact may lead to a risk of contracting the virus. And in some situations even the priests distribute the vibhuthi physically which is again a risk and also usually the devotees tend to put the vibhuthi in corners of the surrounding as the amount distributed by the priests may be in large quantities Keeping in mind all the challenges, this project presents an effective and accurate way by using automatic contactless dispenser machine where the user doesn’t come in contact with anything and the amount of vibhuthi dispensed in consistent and in accurate quantities that is required. The proposed hardware is an Ac to DC based dispenser device which will be dispense the given vibhuthi for the user using IR sensors and sends visual signals to the user.

In this Project, we have developed a mobile application called “Lifeline ERV” in Android and iOS platforms. This app will be used to locate and dispatch the closest emergency response vehicle in case of an emergency, to the respective location. The purpose of the application is to make the journey of the ambulance faster and smoother from the spot of accident to the nearest hospital. Lifeline ERV is an application in which the patient/helper can book the ambulance and track its live location. Each individual who uses the application can register and track the ambulance at every point. This app has a unique feature of broadcasting the live location, (via a pop-up notification) of the ambulance to all the app users in its vicinity of 250m – 500m. After the completion of the ride to the nearest hospital, the user can submit the feedback for the service.

Balance Mate

This project is based on weight distribution monitoring system, which consists of a small ankle wearable device that prevents unequal weight distribution in legs. The device consists of a skin sensitive low power vibration motor fitted inside the module. If the user favors one leg in standing and exerts more pressure on that leg, a real time alerting trigger signal or vibration is felt around the ankle of that leg prompting the user to correct his position and properly adjust the weight on both legs. The module comes with an interactive and user friendly app that constantly tracks the user’s movement. The user can use the options provided in the app to connect to the device via Bluetooth after which the app continuously monitors the user’s movements. The app will also send alerts to the user if he has been sitting or standing at the same position for more than 15 minutes and will suggest movement. The suggested users of this model are those individuals who are required to be standing or sitting for long periods like teachers, professors, industry workers and engineers. The model can also be used by anyone who like to correct their postures.

Autonomous Ariel Medical Assistance

The aim of the proposed project is to monitor the health conditions of registered cardiac patients and alert the quad copter with the location of the patient during critical conditions. Upon receiving the co-ordinates of the person, the quad copter autonomously flies to the destination through its GPS tracking system. A person having a stroke needs to be given the basic treatment immediately. It is very challenging for the ambulance services to provide immediate first aid to the people at severe conditions, due to increasing road traffic. Quad copters are made up of light composite materials in order to increase manoeuvrability while flying and reduce weight. It can be equipped with a variety of additional equipment, including cameras, GPS guided missiles, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), navigation systems and sensors. Thus, this project is intended to make use of quad copters to overcome the issues faced by the ambulance services. The major objective of the project is to act as a proof of concept for small scale autonomous aerial medical assistances. To achieve this the drone is fitted with a GPS tracking system and is programmed to be able to fly from one location to another using GPS co-ordinates. A GPS receiver on the central hub tells the drone where it currently is, by communicating with GPS satellites. To simplify the problem, the quadcopter is designed to fly at an altitude free of obstacles, thus avoiding the usage of sensors for detecting nearby objects. Autonomous aerial medical assistance can be availed by mostly all hospital in the cities to reduce sudden deaths due to lack of immediate treatment. The scope of autonomous quadcopter can be further increased in fields of agriculture, military services, delivery systems and disaster management.
